The mother of an elephant orphaned by poachers at a wildlife park in Zimbabwe was sentenced to two years in prison for trafficking her calf, the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said on Thursday.
Zimbabwean authorities found the elephant orphanaged at the Elephant Sanctuary in Kibale township on Monday.
Police said the child was found with a broken leg and a broken collarbone and had been left behind by her mother.
The animal had been trafficked to an orphanage run by a foreigner, the task force said.
The court said the mother had lied about her age and age of her child and lied about the whereabouts of her son.
It is not known whether the child had been transported to another country or whether he was found at home.
The Zimbabwean High Commission in London said it was monitoring the situation closely and would provide consular assistance.
